Free Crochet Patterns for a Tiger

A tiger crochet pattern is ideal for an animal-themed nursery or for anyone who enjoys animals. Try out all of the adorable animal crochet versions.

There are a plethora of amigurumi crochet tiger patterns to choose from. Read the reviews before beginning your next crochet animal project, a cute animal toy crochet pattern.

I've discovered that keeping a tight tension is necessary for your crocheted animals to turn out well. A test gauge swatch is also required to achieve the same size as the pattern designer.

You'll need plastic eyes for your crocheted animal amigurumi. Amazon is a good place to look. These are my eyes.

If you're making a crocheted stuffed animal for a new baby, I recommend stitching on the eyes or crocheting very tightly. You must ensure that the eyes cannot be pulled out.

Need some pointers? How do you crochet an animal amigurumi?

One of the cutest little animal toys I've ever created. Excellent design! Svetlana is a fantastic pattern designer. I highly recommend her patterns!

• For helpful tips and techniques that you can use when crocheting this amigurumi, please see my blog posts titled "Amigurumi for Beginners," "How to Read Amigurumi Patterns," "The Magic Circle," "The Invisible Decrease," "How to Crochet Around a Foundation Chain," and "The Right Side of Amigurumi."

• Work in continuous rounds to avoid visible seams (do not slip stitch after each round).

• Keep track of which yarn colour you're using for each body part and when you need to switch colours.

• When switching yarn colours, work the last stitch in the old colour as if it were a typical single crochet until two loops are left on the hook (i.e. insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop). Yarn over and pull through both loops with the new colour. Work a slip stitch in the next stitch with a new colour. Then, with the new colour, continue crocheting single crochets as usual.

• The body parts are made with peach, white, and taupe yarn. Tiger stripes are created by embroidering lines with taupe yarn (each stripe is created by passing the yarn needle twice over the line so that there are two strands of yarn). The sides of the head are also adorned with two strands of fluffy white yarn.

Please read the pattern carefully as the head has many components and steps. Follow the steps in the correct order.

• Before closing the head, we'll attach a circular snout and a triangular nose to it.

• Safety eyes are placed in white eye roundies before being placed on the head.

• To keep the eyes and eye roundies from protruding too far, we'll take two steps, one of which is eye indentation (pulls safety eyes back to give more depth). The pattern describes these two steps in detail.

• Next, the ears are crocheted, with each ear made up of a white triangle and a brown triangle. • Finally, the body is crocheted, and a white ovular belly is attached to it. Then we work on the legs and arms, beginning with the paws and working our way up (bottom to the top). The arms and legs' paws are defined by embroidering taupe lines on each paw - make sure the paws are firmly stuffed before beginning this paw embroidery. The arms and legs are shaped to curve towards the body; please note the differences between the right and left leg and right and left arm. To push the fiberfill into any narrow tubes, such as the arms, use a chopstick or the bottom of the crochet hook.

• Finally, a tail is crocheted and attached to the tiger's bottom back. • When assembling the pieces, the parts are positioned so that the tiger is sitting with the arms between the legs. Optionally, run a yarn strand through both legs and arms to secure them in place.

• Inc (increase) = 2 sc in next stitch. [A single stitch becomes two stitches.]

• Dec (invisible decrease): Insert hook into front loops of next two stitches. Yarn over and draw a loop through the first two loops. Yarn over and draw through the two remaining loops. You can find a detailed step-by-step blog post about this extremely useful technique HERE.

• BLO (back loop only): Back loop only crochet stitches: When you look at a stitch, it looks like a V with a front loop (closer to you) and a back loop (further away from you). Working only in the back loops leaves the front loops untouched, resulting in a clearly defined edge.

Finished Height: 5"/12.7 cm, width: 3"/7.6 cm (at head)

PATTERN:

SNOUT: R1: 6 sc in Magic Ring with white yarn. (6 sts)

R2: Inc all around. (12 sts)

R3: *Sc 1, Inc*, 6 reps. (18 sts)

R4: *Sc 2, Inc*, rep 6 times with peach yarn. (24 sts)

R5: *Sc 3, Inc*, 6 reps. (30 sts)

Slip stitch to the next stitch, then fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing.

NOSE TRIANGULAR (worked in turned rows):

Chain 2 with peach yarn.

Row 1: Sc 1 from the second ch from the hook. (1 st)

Row 2: Chain one and turn. Work 3 single crochets in the second stitch from the hook. (3 sts)

Row 3: Chain one and turn. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, *Inc* 3 times. (6 sts)

Row 4: Chain one and turn. Sc 6 in the second stitch from the hook. (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing.

Turn the triangular nose upside down (widest end up) and sew it to the top of the snout. Embroider the bottom tip of the triangle with pink Coboo yarn to create a pink upside down triangle (initial 2 rows of triangular nose).

Embroider the mouth line down from the tip of the pink triangle to the bottom of the white part of the snout with beige/tan embroidery floss. Tightly tie knots from behind the snout so that it folds/bumps out as shown in the picture (this will define the mouth). This piece will be attached to the front of the head later.

EYE ROUNDIES (make 2): R1: 6 sc in Magic Ring with white yarn. (6 sts) (Because you will be inserting the safety eye into the centre of this circle, you do not need to pull the magic loop tightly closed.)

R2: Inc all around. (12 sts)

Sl st to the next stitch, fasten off, and leave a long end (at least 9"/23 cm) for sewing. Insert a safety eye into each eye roundie but leave the backing open.

HEAD \s*** Cut two long strands of peach yarn (at least 20′′/51 cm) and set aside for eye indentation before beginning to crochet.

R22: *Sc 6, Dec*, 6 reps. (42 sts)

R23: *Sc 5, Dec*, 6 reps. (36 sts)

R24: *Sc 4, Dec*, 6 reps. (30 sts)

The eyes and snout will be added next. Insert the eye roundies into the head, placing the safety eyes between Rounds 14 and 15, about 12 stitches apart. Do not secure washer backing or sew white eye roundies yet (you will secure the snout first).

Sew snout to head and stuff between snout and head before closing. The top of the snout is seamed to the bottom of Round 12 and continues downward until approximately Round 20.

The white eye roundies should be sewn onto the head. The eye roundies should be touching the snout's edges. Save the white yarn tails for later because we'll be using them to fill in the eye indentation.

Embroider stripes onto the head with a long strand of taupe yarn threaded through a yarn needle. Because each stripe is made up of two strands of yarn, after you embroider one, go over it again to embroider it so that it is made up of two strands of yarn.

You can place the stripes wherever you want: we put two stripes on top of the head, two stripes between the brows, two stripes above the snout, two stripes near the eye roundies, and two stripes on the sides of the head. Stripes on the back of the head can also be added (we added two vertical lines, but in hindsight would have added multiple horizontal lines if we were to make this again).

To keep the eyes and eye roundies from bulging out too much, we'll take two steps. Please refer to the following images:

Step 1 (as shown by the blue lines): Thread the remaining white yarn strand from the eye roundie through a yarn needle from inside the head. Allow the needle to exit the head near the snout on the inner part of the white eye roundie and re-enter the head nearby. Rep on the other side. Tie the two white yarn ends inside the head into knots between the safety eyes, adjusting the knots as needed to achieve the desired look.

R25: *Sc 3, Dec*, 6 reps. (24 sts)

R26: *Sc 2, Dec*, 6 reps. (18 sts)

Step 2 (as shown by the red lines): We'll use a technique called eye indentation to give the face more definition. Tie knots around the post of each safety eye with the peach yarn strands you set aside at the start. Insert the washers. Allow the strands to cross inside the head and exit towards the bottom/back of the head (our strands exited between Rounds 24 and 25).

To make it easier to tie a knot, make sure that both strands from the SAME safety eye are close to each other when they exit the back of the head (but they should not come out of the same hole). After this, you should have four strands of yarn exiting from different holes in the back of the head.

Stuff the head tightly, ensuring that there is stuffing above and below the crisscrossed eye indentation strands. Pull the peach yarn strands back to make sure the eye indentation looks good. You can make adjustments as needed by stuffing the head more or less, or by moving the peach yarn strands at the back of the head higher or lower.

It is critical to check this before proceeding and finishing off the head, as it cannot be corrected once the head has been closed off in the subsequent rounds.

Cut two strands of fluffy white yarn (10"/25 cm) and embroider them onto either side of the head with a yarn needle. Each strand runs from Round 11/12 to Round 24/25. Tie knots and tuck ends inside head. Complete the head stuffing.

R27: *Sc 1, Dec*, 6 reps. (12 sts)

R28: *Dec* six times. (6 sts)

Check that the yarn ends from the eye indentation are hanging out. Fasten off the working yarn and thread the yarn tail through the front loops of the last 6 stitches. Pull tightly and conceal the end.

Finish the eye indentation with the peach yarn strands: grab the two yarn strands that correspond with one safety eye. Pull back to the desired indentation and secure with a double knot. Rep with the other eye. Weave in the ends.

EARS: Each ear is made up of two pieces: a white triangle and a brown triangle (both are worked in turned rows).

Make 2 white triangles:

Chain 2 with white yarn (leave an initial end of 4"/10 cm).

Row 1: Sc 1 from the second ch from the hook. (1 st)

Row 2: Chain one and turn. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, Inc. (2 sts)

Row 3: Chain one and turn. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, *Inc* twice more. (4 sts)

Row 4: Chain one and turn. Sc 4 in the second stitch from the hook. (4 sts)

We will now smooth the triangle's edges by working single crochets around the two sides. Chain 1, then sc 4 up one side and sc 4 down the other. Fasten off, leaving a 4"/10 cm tail. Tie knots and snip ends short as you move the initial and final ends towards the centre of the triangle.

Brown Triangle (make 2): Using taupe yarn, chain 2 (leave a 10"/25 cm long initial end).

Row 1: Sc 1 from the second ch from the hook. (1 st)

Row 2: Chain one and turn. Work 3 single crochets in the second stitch from the hook. (3 sts)

Row 3: Chain one and turn. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, work Inc, Sc 1, Inc. (5 sts)

Rows 4-5: Chain one and turn. Sc 5 in the second stitch from the hook. (5 sts)

We will now smooth the triangle's edges by working single crochets around the two sides. Chain 1, then sc 5 up one side and sc 5 down the other.

Place the white triangle on top of the brown triangle. Sew one brown end of the white triangle onto the brown triangle (seam all three sides of the triangle so that the yarn strand ends in the same place that it began).

Seam the ears to the head using two ends (extend from around Rounds 5/6 to Rounds 12/13, about 1.6"/4 cm apart at the top).

BODY: Using peach yarn, Ch 5 (foundation chain), R1: Sc 4 in back loops of foundation chain starting from second chain from hook. Turn and Sc 4 in the front loops of the foundation chain [we're crocheting an oval around the chain]. (8 sts)

R2: Inc all around. (16 sts)

R3: *Sc 1, Inc*, 8 reps. (24 sts)

R4: *Sc 5, Inc*, 4 reps. (28 sts)

R5: Sc 28 in BLO. (28 sts)

R6: *Sc 5, Dec* four times. (24 sts)

R7-12: Sc 24. (24 sts)

R13: *Sc 4, Dec*, 4 reps. (20 sts)

R14-15: Sc 20. (20 sts)

R16: *Sc 3, Dec*, 4 reps. (16 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing.

Using taupe yarn, embroider three stripes on the back of the body (each stripe is made up of two passes of yarn):

• 5 stitches across between Rounds 15 and 16

• 7 stitches across between Rounds 12 and 13

• 7 stitches across between Rounds 10 and 11

White Belly: Using white yarn, make a belly.

6 sc in Magic Ring, R1. (6 sts)

R2: Inc all around. (12 sts)

R3: *Sc 1, Inc*, 6 reps. (18 sts)

R4: Sl st 1, sc 1, hdc 1, sc 1, sl st 6, sc 1, hdc 1, sc 1, sl st 5, sc 1, hdc 1, sc 1, sl st 6. (18 sts)

Sc 1 x 3, Inc x 3, Sc 6, Inc x 3, Sc 5 (24 sts)

To bring the yarn end down towards the bottom of the oval, sl st 5. Fasten off, leaving a long end for seaming.

Sew the white belly to the front of the peach body (top of oval begins around bottom of Round 15 of peach body). Try to leave the front and back loops of the white oval belly untouched so that the belly has a nicely defined edge (use stitches behind the front and back loops to attach the white belly to the peach body).

HAPPY CROCHET!
